...AND a thief! She lists her home here as Mariupol, but she lives in Donetsk (Ukraine). She also spells her name Lyudmila, and Lyudmyla. Her last name (according to her passport) is Lichina, but she also uses Licina. I visited this woman twice. I proposed marriage on the second visit, even though something still didn't feel quite right. I know, stupid me, I let my heart over rule my head. So when I got home I set up a fake email address and sent her a nice letter under an assumed name. She fired back a nice letter.... IDENTICAL, word for word, to one she had sent me 4 months earlier! ALSO, I discovered when I got home, that she had "borrowed" my ATM card from my wallet while I was sleeping the day before I left and went out and withdrew several hundred dollars from my account. Sad thing is, if she would have ASKED me for the money, at that time, I would have given it to her! I had spent the last two weeks with this woman, and the sadest part of all is that I became attached to her 11 year old daughter. What kind of training is this woman providing for her daughter... how to use men!?!?!?

UPDATE 9/8/06: She has a SECOND ad (i.d. #223727), spells her name Ludmila, and lists her home town as Kiev!!!!!!!!! This gal is a real con artist! I have had several of my friends "respond" to her ad, and guess what, she sends the same identical letters to them... suggesting hot sex, marriage, and having children together. It all looks so obvious to me know with the beauty of hindsight, but love is indeed blind! I hope everyone who reads this will also go to her ads and send her a nice letter.... just to waste as much of her time as possible!!! I would love to hear about your results!!! UPDATE 28/08/06: She has DELETED both ads. She sent letter to one of my "alter egos" that she is moving to Odessa and will be "unavaliable" for two weeks. I will keep you updated on the movements of this "gold digger".

UPDATE 09/10/06: She's BACK, what a surprise!!!! New ID #229487 on freepersonals.ru. This thime listing her age as 34. The picture she uses is at least 10 years old!!! She must be out of money again.

I apologise for sounding impertinent but how did this woman withdraw money with your ATM card. Where did she get the PIN from. Or did you give her the PIN yourself, or have written it in the back of the card? In which case, I am sorry but I think there is some contributory negligence there.

Also you say you spent 2 weeks with her. Is that in Donetsk? Are you aware how desperately poor some people are in that part of Ukraine? Did you say to this woman: "hey can I help you in some way? Would you like 500 dollars to help you get through the winter while you are thinking if you want to marry me?" Or did you just pay for some expensive meals etc. but never really put your hand in your pocket for her real needs?

A dating scammer in my book is someone who cheats you out of money by asking you to send it by WU etc under false pretences. You very rarely meet them in person as they have multiple identities and would not risk being identified in person. I don't think this lady should have taken your money while you slept but it depends how desperate she was. As for responding to letters from other guys....maybe she was not really in love with you. And using Mariepul instead of Donetsk is hardly a capital offence.

Anyway, some girls probably take it as a hobby to have Western guys as guests, be wined and dined (and...), get some extra cash in some way. Maybe understandable in some way, but it means she's not honest. Is it a scammer? Depends on your definition.

In any case, be very careful if the girl involved is much poorer, if for example she can't afford to travel to you.

First of all, thanks for the feedback. Because of this experience I am much wiser and more cautious. I did also overlook the differences of cultures and languages going into this deal. Here is some more info in response to your feedback. This woman told me she was a lawyer, and makes $500/mo in her country, an EXCEPTIONALLY high wage for there, but still pocket change for most westerners. She owns 3 apartments, one she lives in, 2 she rents out. She owns a laptop, and has Internet service at her apartment (which I never saw). I sent her $2,250 via wire transfer and Western Union prior to her meeting me in Prague for a week before going back to Ukraine with her (this was my SECOND visit). I wanted to MARRY this woman, I did infact show her how to use my ATM card. This does NOT give her carte blanche authorization to TAKE money without asking. I'm a realist, maybe she DIDN'T like me.... SO DON'T accept the damn engagement ring. Even a low class woman in the U.S. wont do that if she has zero intention of marrying the dude.

Again, thanks. I haven't given up on love, and currently have a nice dialogue going with another Ukraine lady... but going at a MUCH slower pace!!!

So true, I made the same mistake a few years ago. Western guys tend to forget that marriage is often a financial deal in large parts of the former Soviet-Union. I later heard that girls are quite open between themselves how to seduce a good man, even if there is no love (also with the local guys).
If you tell a Russian guy you have a girlfriend, the first question is often: "do you love her?". No, of course not... Mentioning the word "love" in the dating adds so often should make us suspicious ;)

Anyway, if she has such good income, why send money at all? She can at least pay for her ticket, as long you're not married she can 'chip in' as well for a nice holiday :) This also doesn't create a bad expectancy for the future.

Working abroad is indeed a good way to increase your income, but local salaries won't be very high in that part of Ukraine. Of else I'm moving there... ;)

Oh well you should have said this before. Maybe she is an opportunist then. I am sorry you had such an experience. I would not show anyone how to use my ATM card though. Not even my mother :)

While in Ukraine a few months ago I was travelling by train from the Carpathians to Kiev. In the compartment I met this guy who after sharing a few vodkas with me got out my Ukraine map and drew me a line on it enclosing most of eastern Ukraine including places like Donetsk and Lugansk. He then said: If you want to meet a woman from Ukraine forget these parts. They are no good. Try north or West Ukraine. Unfortunately his English was not good at all so he could not elaborate it further. But I have taken his advice seriously. He comes from Donetsk.

I forgot to wish you a successful trip. But maybe you are back and can tell us how it went. By the way recently I made my own rough statistical review of all my letters and contacts in the East. You would be surprised to know that there is only a 0.5% chance (1 in 200) to find a lady who you definitely want to meet and do something with. In this I counted all the non-replies, the scammers, time-wasters and all those who haven't got a clue what they want. I wonder how others feel about this.

It is impossible for them to work legally in Germany or other "Schengen"-countries. They often come as tourists (what isn't easy for them) and work illegally as prost...

Yes, I met Julia when I was there. She is a much younger woman (about 22). It is obvious these women are up to no good. They should be banned from ALL websites!!!
