A British friend of mine (who lives in the U.S. now) tells me the Brit's find the expression some American's use "I couldn't care less" annoying.

My parents used to say "see if you can't take out the garbage" I thought to myself, well I'm pretty sure I can't take out the garbage, is there anything else you want me not to do? Of course I took the garbage out without saying anything.

Some funny words, "hoodwinked" and "bamboozled" and one ubiquitous to these forums "country."
"Country" at first glance seems fairly innocent but if you think of it in strictly phonetic terms it sounds like something I would love to have growing in my backyard http://datingtalk.info/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

On the other hand driving down an old country road might not be such a pleasurable experience http://datingtalk.info/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Any to add?

One phrase/intention that I find annoying about Americans especially (no offence http://datingtalk.info/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ) It's not that I got that impression only thru watching american movies, though there is a ratio "dozen american movies - one russian" on tv. It's thru talking too.
Getting to the point - I find strange (to put it mildly) if one person has a problem and another comes up to him/her, takes this person by the hand, looks into the eyes and says "wanna talk about this? " It all reminds me of a session with a psychoanalyst, though I never visited any of them http://datingtalk.info/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif My first response would be definite "no" and probably "thank you".
Same with another thing. When I was teaching English at university, first classes were about greetings and when I taught my students "how are you" I always warned them - all you should say is "fine", noone's expecting you to start telling about all your problems, people will disappear the very moment you start complaining on how life is hard. So just put on your 32-teeth smile and pretend you're alright. Here I see a contradiction - if people do not care and "how are you" is a mere formality, this "wanna talk about it?" becomes absurd.

I've been to LA, but never NYC. But based on their reputations, I might believe it about LA, where people PRETEND to care about each other's feelings. But I would never have suspected it about New Yorkers, who, supposedly, don't even bother to pretend! http://datingtalk.info/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
